THE UFRJPOR SCIENTIFIC COLLECTION
The Porifera collection of the Zoology Department at the Biology Institute, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJPOR), holds more than nine thousand cataloged specimens, including hundreds of type specimens. This collection was transferred to the National Museum of UFRJ (MNRJ) in 1996, when it contained 4,861 specimens, which were incorporated into the MNRJ collection. Following the hiring of Prof. Michelle Klautau in 2002, the UFRJPOR collection was reestablished, digitized, and relocated to the LaBiPor/TaxoN Laboratory (from specimen 4862 onwards). Since then, it has grown steadily, with hundreds of new specimens added each year. The collection includes samples from various depths along the entire Brazilian coastline, as well as from other regions around the globe, most notably Antarctica, the North Atlantic, Australia, the Caribbean, Chile, the Mediterranean, Réunion Island, and French Polynesia.
In addition to specimens collected during the laboratory's expeditions, the collection also includes subsamples from notable international collections, including those from Germany, Australia, the United States, France, England, and Denmark, making this material requested for studies both in Brazil and abroad. Besides the specimens, the collection also contains a large number of microscope slides, images of living specimens, and a DNA bank.
